“You don’t make a photograph just with a camera. You bring to the act of photography all the pictures you have seen, the books you have read, the music you have heard, the people you have loved.”
― Ansel Adams
“Lines and Patterns in Composition”
Human eyes have a tendency to follow the path sketched by patterns and lines. Well composed photographs draw the attention of viewer towards the key subject or towards the area of interest whereas poorly composed pictures may have lines and patterns that can drag the viewers out of the frame or just keep them distracted all over the place.
Straight, zigzag, intersecting, curved or abstract lines and patterns therefore must be used with extreme care while composing a shot. Sometime you won’t find straight or connected lines in the image but I would advice you to keep an eye on the major elements in frame which might connect to each others and act as a passive patterns. Such patterns and lines stay hidden from our consciousness but if you pay close attention you will be rewarded with mysteriously deep and attention binding photographs.
Note : Did you noticed how the connectivity caused by pillars and the whole bridge managed to focus our eyes towards the bright spot in the center of this image. This is one great example of a clever composition ? let us know in the comments below.
